USGA says the average handicap hasn’t improved in decades.
Swing speeds and distance off the tee aren’t gaining any ground in spite of all the latest tech and club innovations.

“Well, I’m just not talented enough…”
The “Talent” Myth
Every year we see skilled athletes making golf look easy.
This happens all over the world.
We see this and say, “Look how talented he is!”
But the reality is that talent has little to do with it.
Something separates the 5% of people that accomplish 95% of the winning…
It cannot be explained away so easily as calling it talent.
People use that word to suggest that players are somehow gifted by God and that explains why they are so successful.
You either have it or you don’t.
End of discussion.
The Lie That’s Holding You Down
They’ve been drilling it into your head since you were a little child:
“It must be in the genes”
It’s an idea as American as baseball and apple pie.
And it’s a lie.
A lie designed to make excuse for why most of us can’t compete against those who win.
The truth is that talent is NOT the deciding factor in your success or failure.
Not even close.
There are far more essential factors that literally make or break your ability to thrive. Without these, all your hard work will amount to NOTHING. Your efforts to get better will have been wasted.
Certainly, there are physical traits that one is born with.
If you are 7 foot, six inches tall, coordinated and fast you have a natural advantage in basketball over someone 5 foot 2.
But great players are not born, they create themselves.
Talent is not a synonym for the word SKILLED.
And one thing is certain…
Training produces skill.
Skill is developed in the Subconscious Mind.
The amount of skill is directly determined by the quality of training, the value of the knowledge you are exposed to and the efficiency of the instructors you are exposed to.
Are you being taught the right things…
…How much time are you spending to learn and grow?
If any of these processes are ignored or performed poorly, you actually negatively affect your results.
How do I know?
The Talent Myth Almost Killed Me, Too
After I graduated from college and started playing golf professionally, I always had the drive to win.
Sometimes I won.
Many times I didn’t.
I worked hard.
But I couldn’t string together winning performances.
In short, I couldn’t tell you why I won or why I lost.
So I gave up trying to play and decided to teach instead.
I Struggled To Find The Answers…And My Students Suffered
At first, everything was great.
As a swing coach, I excelled. I rose quickly in the ranks of golf swing technical teachers.
I grew one of the nation’s largest junior golf academies. I had students of mine winning at every level, both amateurs and professionals alike.
That’s when things started to fall apart.
Once again, when my students struggled, I had no real reason to give them.
I couldn’t say why they would crush it on the front nine, and choke up on the back.
My goto excuse like every other teacher was to just blame it on their golf swing… blame it on technique.
I finally admitted to myself that I had no real understanding of how to teach “winning.”
I began to doubt if I was actually cut out for teaching in the first place.
Then Two Legendary Winners Changed My Life Forever
That could have been the end of my sad little story.
But then I met two men who ended up saving my career.
The first… A Super Bowl Winning NFL Coach.
As a well-known golf swing instructor, I had the privilege of helping NFL Football Coach Bill Parcells on his golf game.
Bill is an avid golfer and we spent a lot of time together.
I confided in Bill my struggle to train athletes for high stakes situations.
Here was a guy that had mastered it at the elite level.
When I confided with him about my struggles, he told me one day, “Shawn, it’s all in the preparation. Winners have to be trained to follow a winning system.”
He invited me in to study what he was doing at the NFL. So I did.
I spent time with him and the coaches he was mentoring… guys like Sean Payton, the late Tony Sparano, Mike Zimmer…
Picking these guys’ brains and watching how they interacted in live high-stakes situations.
I swore then and there I would do whatever it took to find a system of producing consistent winners.
And I started bringing these insights back into my academy…
Oh My Gosh… the results started showing up like crazy and I knew I was on to something.
I Became OBSESSED With Performance
I asked myself what turned out to be a life-changing question:
Was it possible to reverse-engineer talent? To build abilities in such a way that you could experience talent “on-demand?”
I thought of the caveman, who, for thousands of years, viewed fire as a random gift from the gods. Something that could not be created or controlled but only stumbled upon in rare, perfect storm scenarios, such as forest fires or lightning strikes.
I thought of that critical moment in history when man finally learned to create fire “on-demand,” whenever he wanted to, with his own two hands.
That day marked a radical upgrade in man’s evolution.
In the same way, was it possible that we as a species had simply not yet discovered a mechanism for reliably capturing and harvesting talent… for reliably lighting our own internal fires?
…And if so, what was to stop us from learning how?
The Secret To TRUE Skill
That’s when I met my next mentor on this discovery… Olympic Gold Medalist Lanny Bassham.
Lanny had competed and won Gold Medals and World Championships multiple times. During his career, he had developed a formula for winning regardless of the circumstances. Afterward, he wrote several books and started teaching his mindset secrets to others.
As luck would have it, Lanny’s corporate office was right down the street from my academy.
Lanny competed in the Olympics as a rifle shooter. After struggling to win Gold he started interviewing Gold Medal winners to determine how they prepare mentally to compete in high-stress situations.
Eventually, he identified the internal processes that build not only winning performances but the key elements required to master ANY SKILL.
He used that knowledge to become an Olympic Gold Medalist and World Champion in his sport. He set records that stood for decades.
So I spent almost ten years learning his techniques.
I realized that with the right framework, performance could be controlled and developed.
From the NFL, I learned how to train… and with Lanny I discovered how to build the mindset.. things that usually occur in isolation from each other, but seemed to trigger insane levels of results when they were grouped together. Some kind of “force multiplier” effect.
On a hunch, I decided to intentionally combine what I had learned from both of my mentors into my junior academy…using these developing athletes as a kinda human research facility.
I’ll never forget what happened next.
1 Tweak That Unleashed The Beast
Within a short time, strange, mind-blowing things began to happen.
The 150 kids in my academy started getting results day in and day out.
It was unbelievable. During that period my kids won just under 1500 titles around the country.
100% of our graduating seniors were offered scholarships to colleges.
I mean it was amazing.
